Lots of progress!

It's been just over two months without a kitchen. Luckily I've been traveling for about three of those weeks which make it a bit easier. Finally starting to make some REALLY good noticeable progress on the kitchen.  Which means that pretty soon we'll have a kitchen that we'll actually be able to use! Wahoo!

Easter weekend we slapped up 4 gallons of primer painting the kitchen and half bath space. Wow was that drywall thirsty for some paint. Here's a look of what the kitchen looked primed.

Monday night we tackled the kitchen with both of us painting from 5:30-9:30.  Talk about a long day/night.  I'm notorious for a bad painting experience maybe 12 years ago with my dad and brother. They attempted to paint Elmer's glue on the basement walls. I gave up after 5 minutes because "it sucked". I'm pretty sure they gave up not long after. Anyways I've had a bad painting reputation since then even though i successfully painted myself and a ski lodge "berkshire east brown" for many years in college.

Also, we decided to re-lay the hardwood floor in the kitchen. The decision to take up the original 85 year old hardwood was difficult because it was so old and original, however most flooring people told us the floor was not in good shape (it had some large nail holes, chunks of wood that were missing when pulling out nails, dark strip down the center). Rather than have tons of wood filler we decided to get some new wood. We're happy with our decision now, and we've successfully took out a few creaks from the hardwood.  We ripped up the old floor ourselves and saved what we could (hopefully for some cool project down the road). We subbed this job out to a professional :-) They came Wednesday and here is what it looks like:

And yes, those cardboard boxes are infact our kitchen cabinets! Yesterday, we installed all of the upper cabinets with the exception of the large one over the fridge. The plan is to have the free help come on Saturday and knock out the base cabinets.

I'm not sure we ever discussed the cabinets we got. We chose Diamond Cabinets from Lowe's as they were having great promotions - free sink base, free message center, free painted finish and then some additional Lowe's $$'s off depending on how much you spend. I'll need to have a separate post just on the cabinets themselves :-) That's it for now. We'll spend this week finishing up the paint in the bathroom and ordering light fixtures.
